Veterans with wartime residues

Letter submitted today to the Mountain Enterprise 090123

Dear Editor,

I am pleased to see Patric Hedlund's article, "Flap over Purple Heart Is 'Tip of Iceberg' Vets Say" in The Mountain Enterprise
2009-01-16

I have been tracking with great concern the plight of Veterans who are unacknowledged, often neglected by the Veterans Administration, and suffering from the after-effects of war traumas. This is a problem that America has created and one that it must face and deal with.

I wonder, however: Is the VA is the best avenue for dealing with wartime residues? So far, the VA has made it pretty clear that it is serving the needs of a government with an overstretched budget first, and the needs of Veterans second. It is only because of articles such as yours that the VA is grudgingly starting to correct their policy and to offer more help for those who served their country and came away with traumas of brain injuries and severe emotional jarring. (One can't legally label a person with "PTSD" without a medical diagnosis.)

I am a medical doctor trained in psychiatry. I trained when psychiatry was all psychotherapy. I have refused to be coerced by insurance companies and managed care into just prescribing medications. That is not what i signed on for.

Over the years, I have diligently sought out brief, potent interventions to offer in the very few minutes now allowed for psychiatric treatement by managed care. This is now only 15-30 minutes once monthly, down from the 50 minutes once or twice weekly when I started my career in psychiatry in the late-sixties.

I developed a potent, easily learned yet deeply effective method to help my clients deal with their problems. (This has also been enormously helpful for my own traumas, both professional and personal.)

My method is called 'WHEE: Whole Health - Easily and Effectively'. WHEE can be learned in minutes and is highly effective for post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). It gives people the tools to deal with anxieties, fears, panics, anger, insomnia, physical and emotional pains, and more. People carry this tool with them and can use it any time they need it.

WHEE has exceeded all my expectations in its effectiveness. I have come to give a money back guarantee if a person uses WHEE as recommended and has no benefits. Only one person in over six years has claimed it.

I am sensitive to the problems of Veterans' and their families because I served two years in the US Air Force Medical Corps during the Viet Nam debacle.  At that time, I was drafted into the military psychiatric evaluation and disposition machine that processed "disabled troops" out to the VA because the military did not have the manpower or resources or methods to deal adequately with PTSD and other psychological disorders.

I am dismayed and appalled by the callousness of the US Government and the VA. The numbers of suicides in Veterans will exceed the numbers of battlefield deaths before long.

I am willing to teach therapists who work with Veterans and their families how to use WHEE. They can learn over the phone because it is such an easy method to understand and use. (Regretfully, I haven't the time to take on phone sessions with Veterans directly.)

Blessings on your good work.
